The Spotmatic was produced by Asahi Optical Co., Ltd., a Japanese company founded in 1919 and known under the Asahi-Pentax brand. Asahi, initially specialized in the production of lenses for spectacles and precision instruments, expanded into the photographic sector, quickly becoming one of the pioneers of 35mm SLR (Single-Lens Reflex) cameras.
